Pat Cathey painted for years in watercolor, doing impressionistic work, loose watercolors that suggested realistic scenes. She began using acrylics from a need for opaque areas in her painting. She now paints more abstractly.

Cathey begins a painting with color and texture – always working with design principles in mind. Once the image appears of what she wants to develop, she lets memories and imagination take over. She then works toward order in her paintings.
