Bio

For almost 30 years in his studio in the northern Maryland countryside, David Paul Bacharach has been creating unique hand woven metal compositions, drawing from diverse artistic and cultural sources. His unique art of metal weaving has found some of its most innovative expressions in a variety of indoor and outdoors installations. Humble copper and steel are transformed into breathtaking colors, textures and structures that in turn transform the space around them.

In the last 25 years, David Paul Bacharach's art has been shown in numerous exhibitions from Paris to Philadelphia, Indiana to Ireland and Santa Fe to San Francisco. He has been widely praised for his virtuoso metalwork.

Bacharach devotes a good part of his time to teaching a new generation of artists his unique metal weaving techniques. He is regularly invited to teach at schools with tradition in metal smithing.

Bacharach and his unique art have gained the attention of the national media and the art community. He has been featured in HGTV's "Modern Masters" as well as in such prominent publications as the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune and the Baltimore Sun. He has also been featured in publications of interest to collectors and artists.

His objects express not solely an artistic presence, but also a craftsmanlike hands-on approach to materials. He uses easily recognized forms executed in series and approached from divergent stylistic directions to create distinct emotional as well as visual reactions.

David Paul Bacharach's unique art of metal weaving has found some of its most innovative expressions in a variety of sculptures, baskets and vessels. Humble copper and steel are transformed into breathtaking colors, textures and structures that in turn transform the space around them. They are among David Paul Bacharach's most popular creations and they come in a great variety of shapes, colors and dimensions.

I have always spent a great deal of time studying contemporary American crafts, wondering how to incorporate their colors, textures and forms into my metalwork. I have attempted to mesh the forms and images of ancient sources - American Indian baskets and clay, Japanese bamboo baskets and bronzes, pre-Colombian metal - with those from contemporary American crafts.

I was attracted to the metal weaving process primarily because of its spontaneity, a trait that is essential to my method of working. When I begin a new piece, I don't have a definite idea of what that particular object is going to do. As I progress, I determine how each new section will be integrated structurally and visually into the whole.

The result of my technique is that I always wind up with something different from the one before. I push and pull, and sometimes a piece really sings. When that happens, I rarely feel like I’m the person responsible, even if I am the one who made it. What makes it good? It’s in the piece itself.

I want a person to be taken first with the pleasing color and form of the piece. But as they get closer to it, I love to hear them say, oh yeah, look at that!
